If you're bumped from a flight, you may be stuck

Lots of luck catching another flight if you've been bumped or miss a connection.

Commercial airlines in the USA have never been so full. Seven of them — Delta, American, United, Continental, US Airways, AirTran and Alaska — reported filling at least 87% of their seats in July. Even Southwest, always the industry's laggard in load factor, beat the industry's average over the previous six Julys of 84.6% by filling 84.9% of its seats.

U.S. Airlines post 77% on-time rate in July 2010

New York, NY — U.S. airlines were late more often in July than a year earlier, but there were only 3 planes stuck for more than three hours, the government said Monday.

Although there were more late flights in July, the on-time rate for the country's biggest airlines in the first seven months of this year was the third best in 16 years.

Day-long airport strike strands thousands in Israel

— Israeli airport workers staged a one-day strike Monday to press for pension benefits, stranding thousands of passengers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The strike ended after the government reached a compromise with the workers' union.

Over 50% of fliers would prefer families-only sections on flights

Most consumers would like a families-only section on flights, according to a poll released Tuesday by a travel website.

Nearly 60% of more than 2,000 travelers polled by Skyscanner, a fare-comparison website, say they want airlines to create such a section. In addition, nearly 20% said they'd prefer child-free flights.

Miramar, FL — Spirit Airlines had just resolved its pilots’ strike in mid-June when I bought my first ticket on the à la carte carrier.

At the time, passengers were unhappy with the way Spirit handled the strike, forcing many customers to purchase tickets on other airlines or wait days until Spirit resumed flying. The company was also taking heat over its decision to charge for carry-on bags beginning Aug. 1.
