The Associated Press reports "the announcement came after [the Qantas jet] made an emergency landing Thursday in Singapore with 459 people aboard, after one of its four engines failed over western Indonesia and following witness reports of a blast that sent debris hurtling to the ground. Overbooked passengers allowed to stand on 5-hour flight

By Ben Mutzabaugh
October 5, 2010

In case you missed this story from last week, it appears that Russian leisure carrier Tatarstan Airlines has beaten low-cost rival Ryanair to standing-room-only seating. It was not, however, by design.

The carrier -- operating for a tour group -- ran into the problem when it was forced to make an aircraft change on a full Sept. 24 flight from Antalya, Turkey, to Ekaterinburg, Russia. The change involved swapping out a 148-seat model Boeing 737 for one with just 142. That, as the math experts among you can tell, left six passengers without a seat on the sold out flight.

Airlines increase fight against online ticket fraud

By Charisse Jones
October 5, 2010

The Internet, a convenience to travelers looking to quickly book a trip, is also a gateway to fraud, costing the airline industry tens of millions of dollars a year.

Now, some carriers are stepping up their efforts to fight back. They're boosting the staff that tracks crimes and tapping into new technology that can help detect it. But as large airlines tackle the problem, there is growing concern that fraudsters are moving onto smaller carriers whose defenses are not yet in place.

Playing the holiday airfare game

By Susan Stellin
September 30, 2010

TWO days after Labor Day, my sister asked if I had booked airline tickets for Christmas, which felt like rounding the corner on a back-to-school supplies display and running smack into Santa Claus.

No, I haven’t booked a ticket for Christmas, made plans for Thanksgiving or even put away my summer clothes yet. But at this point, it probably is time to lock in a flight for Thanksgiving, and it can’t hurt to start tracking fares for December or New Year’s trips.

Airlines grapple with increased regulatory focus

By Dan Reed
September 24, 2010

Nearly 32 years after the U.S. airline industry was deregulated, U.S. carriers are facing a wave of government and union rules that threatens to unleash the biggest regulatory changes for the industry in a generation.

Driving the shift is mounting consumer dissatisfaction with airline service and growing exasperation over airlines' fast switch to charging extra fees for services — such as checked baggage and in-flight food — that used to come with the price of a ticket.
