New hub for cruise ships coming to Charleston, SC

Charleston, SC — The City Council of Charleston, SC, voted unanimously this week to approve a controversial plan to develop a new cruise ship terminal.
The new facility will take the place of an existing one at the foot of Charleston's Market Street and is part of a larger effort to redevelop the waterfront.
Plans for the new terminal have drawn fierce opposition from preservation and environmental groups who have argued that more cruise ships sailing out of the historic city will lead to traffic jams, pollution and other problems.
"It's good that people can enjoy this sort of inexpensive vacation, but we don't need to be the place for it," one resident told the City Council during a three-hour debate on the topic before the vote, reports the Charleston Post and Courier.
The Post and Courier says local business groups, port officials, representatives of dock workers and several neighborhood groups spoke in favor of the plan.
The news outlet notes the number of cruise ships coming to Charleston roughly doubled from 2008 to 2010, to 67 ships, and 94 are expected in 2011.
The new terminal, which will be able to handle one ship at a time, could open by late 2012.
